Inside Mount vs Outside Mount Motorized Shades: Which Fits Better?

Inside mount is not automatically more custom, and outside mount is not a compromise. The correct mount is the one that fits the opening, clears the hardware, and delivers the privacy or light control the room needs.

What an inside mount does well

An inside-mounted shade sits within the window opening. It can look integrated with the architecture and leaves more of the surrounding trim visible. It also keeps the shade projection closer to the glass.

The opening needs enough flat depth for the brackets and headrail. Handles, locks, screens, tile, and uneven trim can reduce usable depth. Older openings can also be narrower at one point than another, which affects the finished width.

Good reasons to use inside mount

• The frame has adequate clear depth and a solid mounting surface.
• The homeowner wants to preserve visible trim.
• The room does not require the strongest possible edge coverage.
• The opening is square enough for the shade to travel cleanly.

What an outside mount does well

An outside-mounted shade attaches to the wall, trim, or another approved surface and covers the opening. It can hide an uneven frame, clear shallow depth, and overlap the sides and top. That overlap can improve privacy and reduce incoming light.

Outside mount needs enough clear wall or trim area for secure brackets. The final roll may project farther into the room, and the selected width must avoid doors, cabinets, switches, crown molding, and adjacent windows.

Good reasons to use outside mount

• The window is too shallow for the selected motorized system.
• Handles or screens interfere with an inside mount.
• The room needs better privacy or light coverage.
• The opening is visibly uneven and the shade should create a cleaner outline.

Blackout fabric does not remove every light gap

Blackout fabric blocks light through the material. Roller shades still need operating clearance at the sides, so a narrow glow can remain. Outside-mount overlap can reduce that glow. For an extreme light-reduction goal, fitted custom side light blockers may be needed and are included when appropriate to support the client goal.

No normal residential roller installation should be described as laboratory darkness. Light can also enter at the sill, headrail, door cracks, or other windows. The consultation should define what “blackout” means for that specific room.

Five measurements that affect the decision

1. Width at multiple points

   The top, middle, and bottom can differ. The smallest usable inside width often controls the order size.

2. Clear depth

   Measure only the unobstructed flat area. Do not count trim or space occupied by a handle.

3. Projection and clearance

   Confirm that the roll, hem bar, and fabric clear handles, cranks, and furniture.

4. Mounting material

   Drywall, wood, metal, tile, concrete, and hollow trim require different attachment planning.

5. Travel path

   The fabric must move without rubbing the sill, trim, lock, or another shade.

What to ask at the in-home measurement

Ask to see the planned bracket location, the expected side gap, the roll direction, the finished projection, and how charging or service access will work. Those five details prevent more surprises than a product name or fabric swatch alone.
