South Bay homeowner guide
A bright coastal room can be beautiful and still be difficult to use. The right shade should preserve the daylight or view you enjoy while controlling screen glare, late-day sun, and privacy after dark.

Choose for the way the room changes through the day
A room that feels comfortable in the morning can become difficult in the afternoon when the sun reaches a television, desk, or seating area. Motorization makes it practical to use the shade at the exact time it is needed. A schedule can lower selected shades before the glare arrives and raise them later.
Privacy also changes after sunset. Many light-filtering fabrics provide useful daytime privacy, but silhouettes can remain visible when interior lights are on. Bedrooms, bathrooms, and street-facing rooms should be evaluated at night, not only with a daytime sample.
- Keep the viewUse lighter openness where the view matters and the room does not require full privacy.
- Control evening exposureChoose a fabric that meets the nighttime privacy goal, or use a layered system.
- Reduce screen glarePlace the shade based on sun direction, television position, and the time the room is used.
Match the shade to the room goal
There is no single best shade for every opening. A practical project can mix styles as long as the color, fabric family, and hardware are coordinated.
| Room goal | Good starting point | What to confirm at measurement |
|---|---|---|
| Soft daylight and daytime privacy | Light-filtering roller or honeycomb shade | Fabric transparency after dark and the direction of direct sun |
| Bedroom darkness | Blackout roller or blackout honeycomb | Side gaps, trim, and whether fitted light blockers are needed |
| Flexible view and privacy | Zebra or dual-layer system | How the bands or two fabrics align at the finished size |
| Wide door or broad opening | Fabric vertical shade or drapery system | Stacking side, furniture clearance, and track location |

Set a realistic pricing expectation
The motorized light-filtering roller starts at $449 installed for the qualifying base size. It is $50 below the $499 blackout roller starting price. Other motorized shade systems currently start from $499 through $749 for the base size. Motorized drapery and fabric vertical systems are a separate category and currently start at $1,499 for the base configuration.
Width, height, fabric, mounting, electrical work, and specialty configurations can change the total. Current package offers include 10% off three paid shades, 15% off five paid shades with an Echo Show 8 and compatible automation setup, or $5,000 for ten eligible shades with the included smart-home package. Promotions do not stack, and exclusions or specialty additions can apply.
Displayed prices are planning starting points before applicable taxes. Final product limits and pricing are confirmed after measurement.
Common questions
Do I need blackout shades in every bedroom?
Not always. Blackout is useful for sleep and strong privacy, but a light-filtering or room-darkening fabric may be enough in rooms without direct exterior light. We compare samples in the actual room.
Can a blackout shade make a room completely dark?
Blackout fabric blocks light through the material, but light can enter around the edges. Fitted custom side light blockers are included when needed to support an extreme light-reduction goal.
